Wild Dunes
Situated on 1,600 acres at the northeast tip of the Isle of Palms is Wild Dunes, a gated resort area developed in the mid-1970s by the Sea Pines Company (also the developer of Hilton Head Island, SC). First known as the Isle of Palms Beach and Racquet Club, the resort’s founding focus was tennis. In 1980, the Tom Fazio–designed Links Course opened. In 1982, the Harbor Course, a second Fazio golf course, opened and catapulted the resort into the national golf-world spotlight. It was renamed the Wild Dunes Beach and Racquet Club in 1984, and the US Men’s Clay Court Championships was held at Wild Dunes in 1988 and 1989.
Further improvements came in the 1990s with the opening of the AAA Four Diamond Boardwalk Inn and Grand Pavilion in 1998. Today, the community includes full time residents, retirees and vacationers.
Besides the two 18-hole golf courses, extensive amenities within the gates of the resort include numerous swimming pools, 17 Har-Tru tennis courts (5 of which are lighted for night play), planned activities, all-inclusive vacation packages, club social events, fitness and spa facilities, nature excursions to uninhabited neighboring islands, a small grocery and retail shops and fine and casual dining. Wild Dunes was South Carolina’s first resort community and is considered one of the state’s finest by many authorities.
Housing within Wild Dunes includes a mix of private homes, villas and condominiums, and Wild Dunes management makes it easy for owners to rent their properties on the vacation market. Furnished condominiums start in the mid-$400,000s, oceanfront villas and penthouses start at the million-dollar range, and single-family homes can range anywhere from the low $600,000s for modest-sized cottages, the million-dollar range for ocean-view homes, and prices start at about $2 million for oceanfront homes.
